The Role

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for promoting and maintaining a culture of safety within the organization by ensuring familiarity with regulatory programs such as the Respiratory Protection Standard, Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene, and EPA hazardous waste regulations under the guidance of the EHS Director and Senior EHS Specialist.

Main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Manages the site’s hazardous and non-hazardous waste program
  • Maintains the site safety data sheet (SDS) management system
  • Co-leads the site’s safety teams and evacuation teams
  • Conducts safety trainings for employees including new employee orientation, respiratory protection, and hazardous waste protocol
  • Creates and revises safety related standard operating procedures (SOPs) as needed and implements their concepts in the day-to-day work environment
  • Performs administrative duties as needed, including general data entry and filing of training records, compliance documents, and other relevant EHS records
  • Performs incident investigations and assists in corrective action
  • Conducts warehouse and office job hazard analysis and recommends preventative/corrective action where EHS hazards exist
  • Co-Leads the Evacuation Team
  • Co-Leads the Safety Committee
  • Maintains the Pest Control Program
  • Conducts workplace hazard assessments as needed
  • Conducts hearing conservation training
  • Serves as the primary contact for EHS contractors and vendors to supervise on-site work

 

The Candidate

Knowledge: The factual and procedural information required to perform the role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or other related field of study required
  • Experience in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or Engineering (1-2 years)
  • Knowledge of chemical concepts and theories
  • Familiarity with the pharmaceutical process and laboratory equipment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and PADEP standards and guidelines
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification required
  • Hazardous Waste Management and Hazardous Materials Transportation certification required

Skills: The effective use of knowledge and abilities in performance. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Scientific skills including industrial hygiene and chemical protection protocols
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, diagrams, and SOP manuals
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Abilities:  Innate traits or talents a person possesses

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to ensure accurate and timely data reports
  • High attention to detail with the ability to safely work in a hazardous environment
  • Writing skills with the ability to create and review SOPs and safety protocols
  • Public speaking skills with the ability to lead training seminars and meetings
