The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Solid State Chemist to join our Drug Substance and Translational Pharmaceutics team. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing and characterising solid state forms of drug substance (API) and key intermediates as well as providing support the Process Research and Development, Formulation Development and Analytical teams.

You will design, perform and manage experiments to prepare and characterise solid state forms of drug substance, including salt, cocrystal, polymorphic and amorphous forms.   

You will communicate results to clients and other stakeholders and provide mentoring and supervision to more junior colleagues.

Key Tasks:

  • Prepare and characterise novel solid state forms of dug substance
  • Conduct analysis and interpretation of the resulting data to characterise solid-state properties of drug substance and intermediates using techniques such as NMR, XRPD, DSC, DVS, FTIR, optical microscopy, TGA and KF
  • Determination of and development of strategies to control particle size of drug substance
  • Prepare data packages on chemical entities so that their identity can be considered to be conclusively established
  • Provide verbal and written updates to clients and other stakeholders.
  • Provide consultancy to the synthetic chemistry teams on crystallisation methodologies to enhance impurity rejection and provide control of solid state properties
  • Work compliantly with due regard to regulatory, environmental and health and safety procedures.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have good knowledge of and experience in solid state chemistry, including the preparation and characterisation of novel salt and polymorphic forms of drug substance. You will have excellent communication skills and work well within a cross functional project team.

Other skills and experience required:

  • Good written and oral communication skills.  
  • Good understanding of process safety and hazard operability.
  • Either a MSc (or equivalent) or PhD qualification in chemistry or a closely related discipline, with a minimum of four or two year’s relevant industrial experience respectively.
